THE PROBLEM

Friendship is harder to build via swipe mechanics than romance - photo-first matching collapses trust before any real interaction, and the team had to design against well-worn dating-app patterns while tracking a metric dating apps don't: did two strangers actually meet.

WHAT WE BUILT

We built psychology-based matching, illustrated avatars instead of photos, and a first-class flow for proposing a real meetup with a live "on the way" status.

What we shipped, in detail

Interests and personality compatibility drove matching instead of photo-first swiping, raising the signal-to-noise ratio before anyone said hello.

Users built illustrated avatars, removing the appearance-based filter dating apps lean on - this sharply reduced first-interaction anxiety and made the app feel like a community, not a marketplace.

Picking a venue and time and sharing the invite was built directly into the match flow, shortening the path from match to an actual meeting - the company's real success metric.

During a confirmed meetup, both sides could share a real-time status - a practical trust signal for a first meeting with a stranger.

Light gamification rewarded behaviours that moved users from the app to real life - completing a meetup, leaving feedback - rather than empty in-app engagement.
